First dispensary visit: ID, deals, and what to expect

A licensed dispensary is a retail store with a state license on the wall. You show ID at the door, walk a product floor or a pickup counter, and pay. It is not a clinic.

Bring a government photo ID with a scannable barcode. Driver's license, state ID, or passport. Leave the expired card at home. Paper temporary IDs and photos of IDs get refused at most licensed counters.

The scan checks that you are 21 and that the card is real. Shops keep an age log because the state requires it. That is not the same as sharing your visit with the IRS or your employer.

You do not need a medical card for adult-use shops in California or New York. A recommendation only changes tax or possession limits in some states.

First-visit discounts are shop promotions. There is no statewide first-timer coupon. A blog post from last year is often dead. Ask the counter or check that shop's own menu before you travel.
